Redux

Welcome to the relaunch of preyingmantisproductions.com

We’ve been hard at work preparing new material to be enjoyed here starting with our original audio drama series The Long Tale Tavern.  With it’s premier on June 1 2009, the new series will stretch over a 14 week period with a new episode being added each week.  Here’s a brief rundown on the series:

The series was co-written by John Fiato and Douglas Gonnelly and follows the quest of a small band of adventurers as they seek out the Soul Drinker, an evil undead creature who is bent on collecting the souls of kings.  Our heroes enlist the help of monster hunters, clerics, and the mysterious Lost Soul to aid in them in their quest, but, as they will learn, nothing comes easy or without a cost.  Each episode will be approximately 15-20 minutes in length and will end with a cliffhanger leading up to the ultimate confrontation between undead creatures, humans, elves, gods, monsters, and an army of legends.

We’re hoping this will be the first story in an anthology series, and our ultimate goal is to enlist other audio drama writers to contribute stories or ideas for future visits to the Tavern.

If you have any comments or questions along our journey, feel free to drop us a line in the “contact” section of the site.

See you all at the Long Tale Tavern!

Action!

Good new, Mantis Heads (I really have to come up with a more catchy name for our listeners, the whole ‘head’ thing has been used so much…Jimmy Buffet fans like to be called Parrot Heads, Green Bay Packers fans like to be called Cheese Heads, Grateful Dead fans like to be called Dead Heads, fans of the United States Vice President are often called…wait, never mind).

AND NOW…

NEWS FROM THE LONG TALE TAVERN

I just wanted to let you all know that there’s been some action around the Preying Mantis studios.  The scripts for our new series “Long Tale Tavern” are now officially finished.  The scripts total 14 episodes and will be presented here much like a TV series would be.  One episode per week for 14 weeks.  Exciting stuff. We’ve begun casting the roles and will go into the recording phase on September 16th.  I’ll keep you posted as to the progress as I’m sure there will be all sorts of stories to tell about the recording process.

Well, anyone who is a regular listener to our Podacast from the Belly of the Sarlacc is familiar with the Malta (NY) Drive-In’s promise of a big surprise this spring. I had predicted the addition of a second screen on their property and it would seem that I was indeed correct in my speculation. The owners of the property, Ed and Tom Caro have officially announced their plans to unveil the new screen to premier at the opening of the Drive-In late this spring. I look foreword to checking out this new addition to the theater and while I’m at it, grabbing a bowl of that delicious chili that they serve at the snack bar. Ahhhh, summer!

We have a great time putting together our productions. From the writing to post production it’s one big blast. That’s really why we do it!

Well, here’s a small glimpse at some behind-the-scenes fun. Everybody likes a blooper reel, right? Click below for some outtakes from several of our audio dramas.

Record Your Vocie at Home

We make noise. Some of it is in the form of audio drama, some in the form of podcasts, and some in the guise of music. A bunch of lads and lasses with microphones and recording equipment…what we do with them is up to us.

I started out making audio plays way back in my youth using an old two track reel-to-reel tape recorded that my grandfather gave to me. These plays were mostly of the “mocumentary” type. I would take some not-so-newsworthy story (mostly stuff about my home town) and do these fake newscasts complete with on-the-spot interviews of the people involved. I did all the voices and used a record I had which was full of mostly useless sound effects. Often, I would base the stories on the sound effects that I had at my disposal. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to make use out of “Track 7 – Man Dropping Wood on Floor”? Why the hell did they even put that on a sound effects record to begin with?

…in other news, scientists have discovered a rare disease which compels men to drop random pieces of wood upon the floor. One man, Sam Cedar, comments on this disorder.

“I just can’t help myself…every time I pick up a piece of wood I feel as though I need to drop it on the floor. And if I don’t drop it, I break out in shingles!”

Yup…that’s about how it would go. So anyway, a hobby like this had to lead somewhere, right? Yes indeed. I fianally convinced some friends who write, act, or just like to hang out on my couch to join me in this endeavor called audio drama (or audio theater, radio drama…whatever you want to call it). We formed Preying Mantis Productions and have been creating ever since.

Look for more about the history of Preying Mantis Productions in future postings. And maybe, I’ll break out the old reel-to-reel and upload one of those old plays I made as a kid…no promises though.
